Is it possible to find a partner based on the smell of a T-shirt? How are boys growing up today in a world shaped by the manosphere and social media? And what happens to culture when the state starts cutting its funding?
These are just some of the questions that may arise during this year’s accompanying programme of the One World festival. In addition to film screenings, the festival traditionally offers space for meetings, discussions and other cultural events that expand on the themes presented on screen and open up a broader social dialogue.
The accompanying programme has become an inseparable part of One World. This year it will feature a diverse range of guests from the worlds of film, academia, media and civil society. Visitors can look forward to live podcasts, panel discussions, post-screening debates and an exhibition.
This year’s edition introduces a new feature: live podcast recordings directly at the festival. In the lounge of the Lucerna café, audiences will have the opportunity to experience popular podcasts live each day – including discussions with guests and the atmosphere that usually remains hidden behind the microphone.
One of them is Bojs Live, a podcast by Radio Wave host Kryštof Šimek focusing on masculinity, emotions and the challenges men face today. The guest of the festival episode will be documentary filmmaker Vojtěch Petřina, director of the film Vojta’s Life: A New Episode. In his film, he follows his own attempt to find a partner in a somewhat unconventional way. As a soon-to-be forty-year-old living in a Prague studio apartment, he decides to put aside dating apps and try something much more basic – choosing women based on the scent of their T-shirts.
The political podcast Vlevo dole will also appear live at the festival. Host Václav Dolejší will focus on the topic of cultural funding and the position of the non-profit sector in today’s political climate.
His guest will be One World festival director Ondřej Kamenický. Among other things, they will discuss what it is like to organise an internationally respected film festival at a time when public debate increasingly questions whether culture is a priority for the state or rather a “dispensable luxury”.
Episodes of the podcasts Hlas Heroine, Zrnění, Studio N, Vizitka and Monika Zavřelová will also be recorded at the festival. Attendance at the live podcast recordings is free, but it is necessary to reserve a seat in advance via GoOut.
Post-screening discussions are also an important part of the accompanying programme, offering space for a deeper understanding of the themes raised in the films. These debates bring together filmmakers, experts and the public to explore the questions raised on screen.
An online discussion with international expert Donatella della Porta, professor of political science at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence, will accompany the film My Boyfriend the Fascist. Her research focuses on social movements, political violence, terrorism, corruption and police responses to protests. The debate will be moderated by political scientist Eva Svatoňová.
Another powerful topic will be addressed in the panel discussion following the film Portrait of a Confused Father. The discussion, held in the large hall of the Municipal Library, will focus on raising sons, growing up in the era of the manosphere and social media, feelings of failure and the power of self-reflection.
Participants will include Martin Jára, psychotherapist from the League of Open Men, psychologist Vlaďka Bartáková and degrowth activist Tadeáš Žďárský. The discussion will be moderated by journalist Petr Bittner.
Throughout the festival, the accompanying programme also includes the exhibition Repeat After Me 2022, on view at Fotograf Zone. The project focuses on the acoustic traces of war – the sounds of weapons, explosions, sirens and the silence that becomes embedded in the bodies and memories of people living through war or forced exile. It offers another way of reflecting on the themes explored by One World.
