One World in Brussels
Brussels 15/04—19/04
One World, the largest human rights film festival in the world, will fill cinemas and movie halls all over Brussels for its 17th edition. It is organised by the Czech humanitarian and human rights organisation People in Need along with 10 other Brussels-based partners—including the European Parliament, the Czech Permanent Representation to the EU, and The Czech Centre in Brussels. The festival will run between 15th and 19th April and it will present a dozen top-quality human rights films.
For more than two decades, the One World Festival has been an integral part of the activities of People in Need. Since the festival was established in 1999, it has brought documentaries on human rights from around the world to local and national audiences, screening them in dozens of towns throughout the Czech Republic. One World has received numerous awards, including the UNESCO award, for raising awareness of human rights.
This year the audiences in Brussels will have the opportunity to watch a selection of 12 films, of which 11 will be accompanied by expert debates. The on-stage discussions will feature insights from human rights defenders, politicians, filmmakers, and representatives of the international community of non-profit organisations.
The festival will shed light on vital subjects, such as the war in Ukraine, investigative journalism, political activism, and gender discrimination.
The festival's opening night will feature the yet worldwide famous Ukrainian documentary 20 Days in Mariupol. Favourite to win the 2024 Oscar for Best Documentary, 20 Days in Mariupol shows compelling and often brutal scenes of Russian troops advancing into the Ukrainian city in March 2022.
The opening will take place in Cinema Galeries on 15th April. For press accreditations, please contact ondrej.lukas@peopleinneed.net.
