One World is a space for the defence of democracy, reminds festival director Ondřej Kamenický
The 28th Annual One World International Human Rights Film Festival takes place at a time when human rights are under systematic attack, not only by authoritarian regimes, but also by countries that have long claimed to uphold basic civil liberties. The international order, built on the rule of law, responsibility, and solidarity, faces targeted attacks, attempts to undermine its principles, and outright violations, often without consequences for the perpetrators.
We believe that in times of global tension, it’s essential to create a safe space for sharing experiences, naming injustices, and reminding everyone that human rights are not a matter of personal preference or majority opinion, but a responsibility that falls on each and every one of us.
One World Festival features films that challenge established narratives, expose manipulation, and resist the normalization of violence and injustice. We are convinced that even in times of deep crisis, it remains vital to highlight the courage, resistance, and solidarity of individuals and communities who refuse to tolerate oppression.
For years, we’ve strived to ensure that culture is not a privilege, but a living tool for civic engagement. Film, debate, and public gatherings are not mere leisure activities; they’re instruments to defend democratic space, nurture empathy, and strengthen our ability to distinguish facts from propaganda. I’m therefore delighted that this year’s festival, running from March 11 to April 24, will reach 60 cities across the Czech Republic, where we continue to foster a civic forum for sharing, discussion, and dissent. We deeply value our audience, who join us in taking personal responsibility for the world as a whole.
