Sunshine
(Sunshine)
A young gymnast unexpectedly falls pregnant before her Olympic selection trials. Her dilemma reflects the stifling reality of Philippine society and the possibility of deciding her own bodily autonomy despite external pressure.
Sunshine is a talented teenage gymnast, considered a shoo-in for the national team. However, just before the key competitions, she discovers that her sporting dream and her chance at a scholarship are in jeopardy. In the environment of Philippine society, where abortion is illegal and the female body is under strict moral control, she remains practically alone in her decision. An atmospheric, suggestively constructed film, it is tightly bound to the heroine’s perception. This empathetic portrait, set in cramped, colour-faded spaces, offers a hopeful testimony to individual courage in the face of convention and expectation.
