Nomad Shadow

(Nomad Shadow)

Few feelings in the world compare to the inner conflict Mariam experiences. Overnight, she is deported from Spain to her native Western Sahara, a land that is no longer what it once was.

Mariam finds herself constantly torn between what she “should” do and what she truly wants. Bound by the traditional values of her surroundings yet driven by her own desire for emancipation, she feels out of place at home and has no means to return to Spain. She’s left with only a few friends, also living on the margins of society, and a determination to follow her own path at any cost. In the visually refined debut of a Japanese-American director, the film explores not only Mariam’s inner struggle but also a society shaped by half a century of Moroccan occupation.
