Driving Europe

(Driving Europe)

In 2023, a massive strike by lorry drivers took place in Germany. Their goal was to demand proper pay and justice, as their working conditions could be compared to modern-day slavery.

In the European Union, more than 300,000 people work as lorry drivers. These are often cheap labourers from third countries who are exploited by their employers. Fifteen-hour shifts and the resulting sleep deprivation are not uncommon. Haulage companies refuse to pay outstanding wages and do not hesitate to resort to threats of physical violence. The documentary focuses on a group of sixty strikers who fought for their rights and humane working conditions for eleven weeks. At the same time, it poses a question that concerns us all: are we willing to accept the violation of basic human rights for the sake of cheaper goods?
