Eyes of the Machine
(Eyes of the Machine)
They forced her to teach Mandarin at a Uyghur internment camp. Now, safely abroad, this eyewitness to Chinese tyranny exposes the oppression that also struck her own family.
Security cameras track every move, loved ones vanish without a trace, distrust among people is on the rise, and families are assigned party officials to monitor them. This insidious system of Chinese oppression targets Kalbinur Sidik’s family and millions of other Uyghurs—all under the guise of combating alleged extremism, while in reality economically exploiting the Uyghur region of East Turkestan.. Sidik’s powerful account is juxtaposed with state media propaganda and footage from inside the camps and their surrounding areas. The sense of constant surveillance is intensified by the camera’s almost paranoid attention to detail.
