War
(Cuba&Alaska)
“Kuba” and “Alaska” are call signs rather than traditional nicknames—used in wartime, they effectively become personal identifiers. The two eponymous young women, friends bound by life and death, provide first aid and strive to keep the wounded conscious until professional medical care arrives. Even under fire and in the face of personal loss, they rely on humor and camaraderie to keep themselves going. The film’s authenticity is enhanced by footage taken from their mobile phones and GoPro bodycams mounted on their helmets and uniforms. Both women believe in a Ukrainian victory and are determined to help in whatever way they can. When one of the inseparable paramedics becomes seriously injured, their paths diverge. Will they meet again on the front lines, or has their mission to support a besieged Ukraine come to an end? (The film contains explicit war scenes.)
