She
(She)
This atmospheric film tells the story of Vietnamese women working in giant electronics factories. Their testimonies reveal lives shattered by capitalist exploitation and their marginalized position within a patriarchal system.
In northern Vietnamese electronics factories, the workforce is predominantly female. Far from their children and husbands, they provide for families who cannot survive through traditional rice farming. The film reflects on their dehumanizing working conditions as well as life in a hierarchical society, where the sustenance of men and the upbringing of children fall solely on their shoulders. In addition to the anonymized testimonies, the film features a unique reconstruction of factory life, performed by actual factory workers. This allows audiences to see up close the harsh reality of a workplace where even the smallest mistakes are punished.
