Portrait of a Confused Father

(Portrait of a Confused Father)

Is it even possible to be a good parent in a predatory age of illusory needs and false role models? Gunnar certainly tries. He is attentive, playful, and understanding. Yet over time, a dramatic rift begins to open between him and his son.

Over the course of twenty years, director Gunnar Jensen filmed his son’s life—from his first steps, through a shared journey into the wilderness, to early adulthood, which ultimately took a path no one could have foreseen. In a playfully associative and ironically self-reflective portrait of parental uncertainty, Gunnar confronts the fundamental question: where did it all go wrong? How is it possible that those closest to us can also become the most distant? Both tender and lighthearted, this journey into the inner worlds of two men spans multiple eras and exposes the fragility of the moral values that shaped them.

Gunnar Goes Comfortable

Gunnar is a young filmmaker with a passion for motorcycles, women, and addictive substances. At the same time, he struggles with deep feelings of self-loathing. When he is diagnosed with diabetes, like many others, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery in India.

The person in dark sunglasses leans towards the camera in a desolate, sunlit landscape. In the background, a large building is visible.

Gunnar Goes God

Sometimes having it all—the perfect family, perfect house, and perfect job—is not enough to feel fulfilled, as this chronically unhappy director demonstrates in his explosive mix of toxicity and self-reflection.
