Kabul, Between Prayers

(Kabul, Between Prayers)

What’s it like to live as a member of the Taliban? Samim must balance patrolling Kabul, managing disputes with his wife, helping out on his father’s farm, and guiding his younger brothers in the faith.

Samim’s daily routine stands in stark contrast to that of his fourteen-year-old brother, Rafi, who still plays typical boyhood games and blushes when asked if he likes a girl—yet is simultaneously undergoing radicalization, a stark reminder that boys like him could one day become suicide attackers. The director assumes the role of a sensitive observer, offering no judgment. This approach allows both chilling moments and seemingly ordinary scenes to resonate, portraying a patriarchal society where women have no place, honor is reserved for men, and faith reigns above all.
