It Was Just an Accident

(Yek tasadef sadeh)

A chance sound drags Vahid back into haunting memories of a sadistic torturer. His heart swells with the desire for revenge, yet his conscience quietly urges him to gather more proof. Jafar Panahi’s sharply crafted drama confronts urgent questions of guilt and responsibility.

A chance encounter brings former political prisoner Vahid face-to-face with a man he believes to be his torturer. He has never seen the man’s face, but he recognizes the sound of his artificial leg, or at least he thinks he does. Vahid’s impulsive plan for vengeance is soon clouded by doubt. Together with other former prisoners, he sets out to confirm the man’s identity. A playful road movie with deeply existential roots, the film turns a lens on contemporary Iranian politics. Palme d’Or winner Jafar Panahi draws on his own experiences as a repeatedly persecuted filmmaker, posing a vital question: is it possible to take revenge on an oppressive regime through the individual who serves it faithfully?
