The enfant terrible of both festival and Israeli cinema, Nadav Lapid, returns in brutally sharp form, following a morally conflicted hero tasked with composing a new, more bellicose Israeli anthem.
Tel Aviv musician Y hates violence, condemns the cruelty of the Israeli army, and despises elitism. But when he receives an offer after October 7th to write a fiercely militant anthem, he accepts it despite his convictions because he has a family to feed. A genre-bending film, it is a captivating ride through wild plot twists, provocative scenes, and deeply existential reflections set to a punchy disco beat. Formally uncompromising, the film explores the depths and boundaries of conscience, love, and national identity. The motif of “selling out” challenges our moral code and emphasises the internal turmoil of a person living in a country whose policies they disagree with, yet that they are part of. (The film contains scenes with explicit sex and nudity.)
