IRKALLA: Dreams of Gilgamesh

(IRKALLA: Dreams of Gilgamesh)

Chum-Chum’s parents were killed by the Islamic State. To survive as an orphan on the streets of politically turbulent Baghdad, he retreats into the world of his favorite hero, Gilgamesh.

Nine-year-old Chum-Chum dreams of following the mythical king into the realm of the dead to reunite with his parents. His slightly older friend, Moody, sees hope in a different path: a better life in the Netherlands. To fund the journey, he becomes entangled with a militia helping violently suppress ongoing protests. This poignant drama from war-torn Iraq reveals how even the youngest are forced to choose between escape and complicity.
