9-Month Contract
Surrogacy in Georgia exists in a legal gray zone, yet for young single mother Zhana, it seems like the only way to provide herself and her daughter Elena with a dignified life, education, and a future.
Eight years after a desperate act to save her mother, Yen is released from prison and returns home to see her. She discovers that her home is no longer the place she once knew. Yet, while time has relentlessly moved on, the most painful things remain unchanged.
Eight years ago, Yen killed her father, who had been abusing her mother. Now, after spending time behind bars, she returns home to find that her mother has not learned from the past. Alongside caring for her family and her own future, Yen must also take responsibility for a newly discovered brother. Reintegrating into society after serving her sentence proves far more difficult than she could have ever imagined. Through its slow, deliberate storytelling, naturalistic cinematography, and striking black-and-white aesthetic, this Taiwanese film unravels a story of family secrets, complicated mother-daughter relationships, and the cycle of violence that only begets more violence.
