A humorous look into the heart of a Turkish village, where a group of women decide to challenge traditional social roles in an imaginative way. They do so with due wit and stubbornness.
“We’re Malaysian and queer!” The chant that opens every show sets the tone for punk band Shh…Diam!’s fight for freedom in a strictly Muslim country – both on stage and off.
Malaysia is a country where political power has long been intertwined with religious conservatism, and where LGBTQ+ people are systematically discriminated against and arrested. The documentary offers an intense, multi-year portrait of a four-member band that openly challenges patriarchy and the strict rules of sharia law. Their fight for equal rights unfolds not only at protests and on concert stages, but also behind closed doors, where they pursue understanding and acceptance within their own families with the same determination. The film explores political engagement, bodily transformation, and self-expression, revealing how difficult it is to live authentically in a society that harshly suppresses sexual and gender differences.
