North South Man Woman

(North South Man Woman)

North Korean women seek love and stability in South Korea. This intimate and often humorous portrait explores relationships between two divided worlds.

The film follows five years in the life of Yujin Han, who, after escaping North Korea, established a matchmaking agency in Seoul connecting North Korean women with South Korean men. Through the relationships that emerge, cultural differences and the ways political realities shape romantic expectations come sharply into focus. How does life under a totalitarian regime mould North Korean women? Are they really more beautiful or submissive than women from the South? At once personal and societal, intimate and occasionally humorous, the film paints a vivid portrait of two very different realities.
