9-Month Contract
Surrogacy in Georgia exists in a legal gray zone, yet for young single mother Zhana, it seems like the only way to provide herself and her daughter Elena with a dignified life, education, and a future.
Deep in the wild Cuban wetlands, Lando seeks a living for his family. With the confidence of a seasoned hunter, he embarks on risky multi-day expeditions to hunt crocodiles.
While Cuba struggles with the COVID-19 pandemic, Lando and Mercedes’s primary concern is the desperate lack of food. The man regularly returns to the marshes to hunt crocodiles with minimal equipment. In his absence, his wife becomes more and more anxious as she awaits Lando’s safe return. The daily rhythm of life for the couple, who are also caring for their autistic son, is framed by moments of reunion, separation, and the care they provide for their child and each other. The black-and-white aesthetic lends the film an extraordinary intensity, drawing the audience into close proximity with the protagonists, while the camera reveals the wild beauty of the Zapata Nature Reserve with captivating urgency.
