Feature film
Father
A single moment alters the course of the protagonist’s life. The film follows the consequences of a fatal mistake and asks whether one can continue living after another life has ended.
Surrogacy in Georgia exists in a legal gray zone, yet for young single mother Zhana, it seems like the only way to provide herself and her daughter Elena with a dignified life, education, and a future.
Director Ketevan Vashagashvili shares a long-standing friendship with Zhana, allowing her to film the family with unprecedented intimacy. Their tiny apartment becomes a microcosm of closeness and mutual care, constantly interrupted by Zhana’s need to earn money. Working at a convenience store is not enough, and she repeatedly returns to the role of a surrogate. Her situation reveals both the harsh social realities of Georgia and the boundless depths of maternal love. How far can Zhana go before her body is irreparably damaged? The camera’s proximity makes the audience part of this unusual family unit, experiencing both tender moments and the stark intensity of the operating room.
