Balomania
The launching of colourful hot-air balloons has a rich tradition in Brazil, and its popularity didn’t diminish even when made illegal.
Queer policewoman Pooja lives in strongly patriarchal Kathmandu and must hide her sexuality. Sent to southern Nepal where tensions exist between the Nepalese majority and the Madheshi minority, she has to solve the touchy case of a politician’s kidnapped son. As an elite police officer, she uses skills acquired in the West. Her empathy and logic are enhanced by her own experience of oppression.
Based on true events from 2015, the film combines the detective genre, socio-political drama and the personal emancipation of a woman whose struggle becomes part of the broader struggle of an oppressed segment of society. The film depicts both the country’s unrest and the tensions that influence and shape the very nature of the individual.
