The film is the story of a daughter of parents fighting for freedom in South Sudan, who returns from exile after several years. She wants to follow in the footsteps of her mother, a prominent female figure in the political history of this young African country.
"My father spent 21 years at war and died after 21 days in office," opens director Akuol de Mabior's life story, which is closely linked to the creation of Africa's youngest independent country, South Sudan. Archival footage of the struggle for freedom mixes together with the personal accounts of two women – a mother and daughter – who together return to a place to which they are bound not only by memories but also by feelings of duty and responsibility. In a country where banknotes bear her late father's portrait, Akuol wants to build on her father’s peacekeeping work, which ended the longest civil war in African history.
