THERE WILL BE JUST ONE ONE WORLD. THIS YEAR ALL OF IT WILL HAPPEN IN MAY.

JS bude jen jeden

Like for many other festivals and cultural events, 2021 and the ongoing pandemic have been a challenge for the One World Festival. However, the organisers have faced it head on and now present changes and innovations that respond to the unfavourable situation. The International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival will take place from 10 to 28 May. Unusually, it will kick off in the regions and then turn into an event that will take place simultaneously in many places throughout the Czech Republic within less than a month. The Prague part of the festival, which has always opened the event, will be moved to the end and will take place in parallel with other regional festivals of the 23rd One World. Viewers can look forward to it from 20 to 28 May. It will include the traditional awarding of the Homo Homini award for human rights and the closing ceremony with the announcement of the winners of the competition categories.

"One World has never been an event that would take place entirely under the direction of Prague," says Ondřej Kamenický, director of the One World Festival. "On the contrary, the festival has always uniquely adapted to local social contexts throughout the Czech Republic and to the individual personalities of all those who work on it in various parts of the country. Last year showed us that we need to further strengthen this exceptional collaborative and decentralised character of One World and leave behind its long-established structure." He pointed out that unfortunately some regional festivals could not take place last year, although the teams prepared them twice – once in the spring and a second time in the autumn. "We were extremely pleased that most of the regional teams decided not to deprive viewers in their cities of powerful documentary experiences and to devote twice as much time and effort to this year's event. Given the overwhelming amount of energy they spent in this extraordinary situation, the festival's organising team decided to move the event to May."

A new era, new festival?
Even though the current situation is not conducive to culture, festivals and meetings in the offline world, the organisers believe that they will be able to hold the festival in as traditional a physical form as possible. They are prepared to comply with all hygiene and safety measures that may come with showing the films in theatres. At the same time, they are preparing for a situation where meeting in person will still not be possible. "Last year taught us that nothing is certain, and it is necessary to adapt quickly to the current situation," said the executive director of the One World Festival, Lenka Lovicarová. "That is why we are currently preparing more variants of the festival and we can assure the audience that the festival will really take place in May."

Nevertheless, an online festival is more than just a crisis solution in case of cinema closures but has become a natural part of the festival. It expands the opportunities for viewers to access the festival programme, and thus the accessibility of documentaries for existing and new audiences.
