One World will screen documentaries throughout the Czech Republic in 2020

Jeden svět Plzeň

Thirty-five! That is the exact number of Bohemian, Moravian and Silesian cities that will host One World after the conclusion of the Prague part of the festival. Audiences will be able to see the best new human rights documentaries on offer. Inspiring people with strong and courageous stories outside the capital is one of the main ideas of the festival. One World wants to be at least a nationwide event!

This can only happen every year thanks to the regional teams in each city. Usually they are formed from cultural associations or regional branches of the parent organisation People in Need, which unites people's interest in the world around them – whether in their own backyard or on the other side of the planet. The regional teams are now emerging from their summer slumber and are slowly beginning to prepare the new edition of the festival to give audiences a great experience from mid-March 2020.

The Central Bohemian town of Řevnice is the latest to become part of the One World map, with the festival premiering here on 26 April next year. Řevnice will right away be the site of two firsts: it will replace Police nad Metují as the smallest festival community and will become the first place where One World is organised by the town itself. It will be assisted by the Gong association, which operates the Řevnice cinema.

Besides small municipalities, the documentary films can also be viewed in three large cities where the festival is traditionally held in addition to Prague. The first of them will be the 21st annual festival in Brno, which the local organisers of the League of Human Rights have planned for 20 – 27 March 2020. The big event there will undoubtedly be the long-awaited return of the festival to the Art Cinema in Cihlářská Street, which for years was closed due to asbestos and damaged structural elements. In total, five screening venues are planned for visitors, including the traditional Scala Cinema.

Plzen will host its 20th anniversary festival on 23 – 28 March 2020. The festival is organised by the local branch of People in Need, which in addition to screening the films, will focus on social work in the field, such as debt counselling for families in the Plzen area. A big celebration is planned for the jubilee year, with the creation of anniversary material in cooperation with the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia.

For the 22nd time, the festival will also move to the North Moravian city of Ostrava, where it will be held from 26 March to 3 April 2020. The festival will be organised by the One World Ostrava cultural association, who is looking forward to the visit of the director of People in Need, Šimon Pánek, next year. For example, they are planning to expand their collaboration with the PLATO Gallery, which focuses on contemporary visual art, and to make most of the programme available to viewers with disabilities as part of the One World for All project.

In addition, the One World Festival will take place in 31 other cities next year. Which ones? Stay tuned for the announcement of the other festival venues soon!
