When the Taliban retook power in Afghanistan, fear and helplessness reigned over the editorial board of the independent newspaper Etilaat Roz. Journalist and director Abbas Rezaie observed the atmosphere in the team, whose members suddenly find their lives in imminent danger.

Between August and October 2021, the office of the renowned newspaper Etilaat Roz became a fortress. The editorial team tries to report objectively until the last moment on what is happening in Afghanistan, where the Taliban has resumed control over the government. Outside, the sounds pf explosions and warplanes can be heard, and chaos reigns at Kabul Airport. Editor-in-Chief Zaki Daryabi refuses to abandon the “sinking ship,” but soon realizes that journalism and the safety of his team are now mutually exclusive. Censorship and violent attacks on journalists raise a fundamental question in the newsroom: Stay or try to escape the country?
