My Boyfriend the Fascist

(My boyfriend el fascista)

Couples therapy at the intersection of home video and social essay. Author Matthias Lintner unflinchingly turns the camera on himself and his boyfriend, who has begun to lean towards far-right ideology.

Matthias is a classic Western leftist, while Sadiel grew up in the socialist paradise of Cuba. An ideological rift gradually strains their partnership. A series of unprecedentedly intimate, soul-baring conversations unravels conflicting worldviews and, above all, the reasons behind the turn to radical tendencies. Can a relationship be preserved despite a split in fundamental values? Both a tender and sharp catalyst for dialogue, captured in almost meditative, static shots, the film blurs the line between the microworld behind the front door and the omnipresent social debate. Eschewing biased judgment, it seeks much-needed understanding through personal creative courage. By turning the camera on his own domestic life, director Matthias Lintner creates a hauntingly honest social essay that explores the limits of empathy and the possibility of maintaining love amid extreme political polarisation and radicalisation.
