This unusual animated documentary tells of the hardship-filled journey of a gay Afghan man to Europe. An intimate view of one family’s tale, it is also something of a universal refugee story.

Danish documentarist Jonas Poher Rasmussen and Afghan refugee Amin Nawabi met on a bus in Denmark when they were 15. It took 25 years before Amin allowed Jonas to tell his story. Over the course of four years, they conducted dozens of interviews together, which formed the base for this animated epic film with Oscar ambitions. Amin tells of his father who disappeared, and how he, his mother and his siblings travelled to Soviet Moscow on a tourist visa, and their subsequent attempts to reach the West, which separated them for many years and almost cost them their lives. This is the first time that Amin opens up about the traumas of his childhood and confides painful memories. The film was provided to the festival by the distribution company Film Europe.
