When a City Rises

When a City Rises

Czech premiere

Through the stories of five young people, the film records the dramatic student protests during the mass pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong.

For decades, the people of Hong Kong have tried to promote democracy in a peaceful way. In 2019, however, the situation changed radically. A new law allowing the Hong Kong government to extradite people to the Chinese authorities for prosecution sparked a huge wave of demonstrations, which were met with rubber bullets, tear gas and Molotov cocktails. Students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong organised a massive strike, requesting an amnesty for those arrested and calling for an independent investigation into police violence. The protagonists of the film – Eve, a representative of the student union, Tan, who finds himself at the forefront of the struggle, and other young people – put their health and lives on the line in the fight for freedom and democracy.

Impact

Protests for Hong Kong’s autonomy have moved the world in a similar way to the protests that followed the presidential election in Belarus. The documentary When a City Rises captures them through the lens of the individual stories of several protesters, primarily students. There are several campaigns in support of Hong Kong, and solidarity can easily be expressed, for example, thanks to Hong Kong Watch. You can go through the current campaigns on their website and make a financial donation, thus becoming a member of this "watch" yourself.
