Illegal logging is taking place in remote regions around the world, which contain the most forests and wildlife. It destroys biodiversity and has serious social consequences.

There are no official statistics on illegal logging, as no records are kept. An international organisation fighting environmental crime, led by Alexander von Bismarck, is embarking on a detective investigation. Alexander gradually uncovers the intricate pathways of the global trade in illegally harvested timber. Through the Russian taiga, he enters China, revealing the practices of the timber mafia and a well-known European player in the logging industry in the Romanian forests. In Peru, he witnesses local communities being unwittingly misused to cut timber. Is there a way to monitor logging in order to prevent crime and corruption? And how do local governments, losing their revenues, approach the issue?
