Czech competition

The fourth year of the Czech Competition presents the newest locally produced films worthy of attention. This section aims not only to show films making their world premiere but also to give space to those that have already been seen at festivals and to highlight them within the context of One World in the Regions. As in the past, some of the films are Czech co-productions – this year, in addition to films by Slovak directors the selection also includes the work of filmmakers from the USA and Russia. The motivation is strong to present films with environmental themes and there are four such works included. Other documentaries cover themes such as political causes, living with a disability, and online safety.

Doggy Love

1,200 kilometres of snowy landscape to be covered in 12 days. These are the conditions for the Finnmarksløpet sled dog race and Czech husky breeder Jana Henychová is set to participate again.

The human species is starting to realise its transience and human identity is in crisis. The film tries to reflect this feeling forming a nonanthropomorphic view of the landscape and nature. An audio-visual requiem for homo sapiens.

The heroines of the film are seriously concerned about the future of humanity and the planet. They organise activist events within the Czech branch of the Extinction Rebellion movement, which raises awareness about the impacts of the global environmental crisis.

HHow would an extra-terrestrial intelligence view homo sapiens and the way the species plods along? The way we humans treat our planet? Do Czechs differ in how they care for nature?
