14 years after Evelyn decided to commit suicide, those closest to him set out on a trek through the countryside. They want to finally break the silence and openly discuss the entire situation.

Here, documentary maker Orlando von Einsiedel, who usually covers conflicts in Congo or Syria, decided to focus on a very personal theme: coming to terms with his brother’s death. On a trip through the British countryside, where Evelyn felt at home, he records conversations with family members and closest friends. As the landscape gradually changes, so do the emotions of all those involved, from smiling memories of shared moments to bitter tears and self-blame. How will the attempt to reach a deeper understanding and reconciliation end?

Impact

In Evelyn, a family tries to cope with the death of their brother and son. Suicides (especially among men) are still a big problem, even in the Czech Republic. An important method of prevention is communicating with our loved ones and offering help. Prevention of psychological discomfort is addressed, for example, by the Liga otevřených mužů (League of Open Men). You can find a list of their courses and how to support their activities on their website. We invite you to the accompanying event Suicide: A Mass Social Phenomenon? on Thursday, 7 March and to an exhibition by Aktuálně.cz that focuses on male suicide. More info: http://www.ilom.cz/
