Golden Dawn: A Personal Affair

Χρυσή Αυγή: Προσωπική Υπόθεση

Category: Vote for Change!

The rise of the Greek political group Golden Dawn, which makes no secret of its neo-Nazi views, inspired director Angélique Kourounis to go beyond the limits of a detached observer. She admits that her family background and her own leftist political beliefs have built a strong opposition in her mind towards Golden Dawn. She critically documents its methods, which range from populist food distribution to unemployed Greeks, to brutal harassment of foreigners and even murder. She is a witness of the frequent favourable response to Golden Dawn on the part of the police or the church. Thanks to testimonies of "respectable" supporters of Golden Dawn, she raises obvious parallels with the rise of the Nazis in Germany and with the success of similar movements elsewhere in the world.
