Freightened: The Real Price of Shipping

Freightened: The Real Price of Shipping

A "Made in Bangladesh" label on your coat does not mean that the entire garment originates from the South Asian country. Its parts have most likely migrated from other developing regions, and before the entire garment was processed and eventually landed on the shelf in your store, it may have travelled around the globe up to four times. But you wouldn't know this from the price. Every day the seas are crossed by freighters many times larger than the Titanic, shipping tens of thousands of tons of cargo in containers. Who actually pays the hidden costs associated with the movement of goods? Who is responsible for the environmental disaster caused by frequent accidents, and who allows the exploitation of cheap labour? The investigation uncovers the shocking aspects of the shipping industry and casts a dark light on one of the cornerstones of globalisation.

There are shipping companies who aim to improve the effectiveness of ocean transport and reduce its negative consequences. Join the campaign and sign the petition for sustainable transport. Take an interest in how goods reach you and give priority to local products
