CALLING THE GHOSTS
Mandy Jacobson, Karmen Jelinèiæ | USA | 1995 | 61min. | Documentary | Colour | Betacam

category: Voices of Women, Focus on Bosnia
synopsis:

Two adult friends make each other a promise: If they survive the hell of Bosnia, they will tell the world of the atrocities they have seen and suffered. Both women were raped in a camp in northwest Bosnia, and South African sociologist Mandy Jacobson and human rights lawyer Karmen Jelinèiæ focus on their stories in this documentary. What started out as a struggle against the reticence of women in the camps to tell their stories, became a search for justice in the world outside Bosnia. The film adds urgency to demands that the perpetrators not go unpunished, and that rape be acknowledged as a war crime.
