Coexistence, My Ass!

(Coexistence, My Ass!)

Comedienne Noam Shuster-Eliassi takes up the fight against prejudice towards the Palestinian people. Her weapons are a microphone, courage, and humour. But can an Israeli celebrity change her own society through stand-up?

Noam grew up in an environment that inherently cultivated the idea of coexistence. She spent her childhood in the Neve Shalom community, which was founded by Jewish and Arab residents as an example of dialogue between the two communities. This unique project inspired her to pursue a successful human rights career, which she soon transformed into the explosive humour of stand-up. She based her comic persona on “taking shots” at her own side, making politically incorrect fun of the prejudices that exist on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Using biting, well-aimed jokes, she transcends the seemingly insurmountable limits of the region’s traditions and history.
