The Shadow Scholars

(The Shadow Scholars)

Many educated people in Kenya are unable to find qualified work in their own country. As a result, they often make a living by writing essays for students at Western universities. How does this secretive plagiarism ecosystem function, and why does it reach even the most prestigious institutions?

Sociologist Patricia Kingori, the youngest Black professor in Oxford’s history, embarks on an investigative journey to uncover the darker side of academic life. The film thoughtfully reveals the lives of people who, under intense time and financial pressure, anonymously produce academic work on demand. Their invisible labor raises provocative questions about the relationship between the global South and North, and about the very purpose of higher education itself.
