Does anything like a traditional family truly exist? Look for the answer in our LGBT documentaries

novinka_gender

Lately, it seems that even more defenders of conservative values have come swarming out of the woodwork. Gay marriages and placing small children in nursery schools are allegedly a threat to the traditional family and consequently also the collapse of the foundations our civilisation is built on. But what exactly is a “traditional family”? A father, mother and two children? Does that even exist nowadays? Is it really even traditional, or only an interim phase between the large family structure of a village and the atomised populations of large cities? This year’s One World presents several films with LGBT themes, which look at the concept of a family from different angles and perspectives.

What’s it like to win a gay beauty competition in a country where homosexuality is not tolerated? Is it even a win? Husein is able tell you all about it. He is a Syrian refugee working illegally in Turkey as a barber, and he is getting ready for the international round of the competition Mr. Gay Syria, which is taking place in Malta. The problem with his excursion is that he has a wife and small daughter waiting for him at home, and his entire family is strongly conservative…

Her mother is Lithuanian, her father Syrian, and she is a feminist lesbian. This is the cocktail that gave rise to Swedish rap superstar Silvana Imam. Her pounding beat and uncompromising texts bring the fans running, mainly the female ones. Silvana’s courtship with Beatrice Eli, the pioneer of feminist pop, has taken her beyond the borders of the LGBT community and she has become one of Sweden’s number one stars. But what is Silvana like in her private life?

Have you heard of asexuals? These are individuals who don’t care for sex and often don’t even want a relationship, and they identify as part of the queer community. What are their lives like in today’s society, when sex is an inherent part of daily life? Director Eva Lammelová will present her documentary, AsexuaLOVE, at its world premiere screening of Wednesday, 7 March, at 7:45 pm at the Atlas Cinema.

To have children or not? And what are the right conditions they should be brought into? In her documentary, Non-Parent , director Jana Počtová explores what families look like in the twenty-first century: ranging from a single woman with adopted twins, including a divorced couple, and ending with a couple who does not want children at all. This mosaic of non-traditional forms of (non-)parenthood indicate that nowadays bringing up children need not be something only for biological parents and does not even need the classical division of roles between mother and father.

The documentary Impreza – The Celebration is also indirectly associated with LGBT themes. It shows how different opinions about gender and gender equality can be, as well as other topics that are currently the subject of open discussions in one branched-out family in Warsaw. The document is that much more interesting because we are after all not that far from Poland, and we are surely involved in debates of a similar nature at our family get-togethers.

It simply wouldn’t be One World if we didn’t move from films directly to actions. At this year’s festival, we welcome a stand operated by the Jsme fér / It’s Only Fair initiative, which is collecting signatures for a petition to legalise LGBT marriages. After seeing one of our films, you can stop by and add your signature. Should you miss this chance, there are other locations where the petition can be signed – you’ll find a list on the initiative’s website.
