A Thousand Fires

A Thousand Fires

Czech premiere

Myanmar’s Magway region is characterized by its many petroleum fields. Here, against a backdrop of mud, hard work and dirt, a common theme for families on every continent plays out: parents want a better life for their son than theirs has been.

A couple labours on their small petroleum field. The local mineral wealth is exported to all Asia, but each barrel hides days of arduous work carried out without advanced mining technology. Their daughter is raising her own child while taking care of the household, while their adolescent son is not keen on helping his parents or studying. Like teenagers around the world, he loves football more than anything. Will his dream fit in with the harsh reality? How will the family’s spiritual practices affect the situation? The documentary is a tale of tireless parental love and care as well as a powerful visual and aural experience taking the viewer directly to the petroleum fields.
