Nothing but the Sun

(Apenas El Sol)

Mateo was born into the Ayoreo people in the Paraguayan primeval forest. As he ages, he feels the need to preserve the unique heritage of his people and pass it on to future generations.

Shamanic drumming, traditional songs and memories of when the Ayoreo still lived in a paradise. Mateo records all of this on his old tape recorder. Although he could think of relaxing, he uses his strength to ensure that his culture and identity are not forgotten. This intimate documentary tracks Mateo’s silent and often painful conversations with other people like him who were taken by force to unfriendly reservations, where they can do nothing but pray to god to not let them die of hunger and thirst. White missionaries sold their fertile land and took over everything, including water. All the Ayoreo have left is the glowing sun…
