Once Upon a Sea

Once Upon a Sea

This poetic interactive VR film about the drying-up Dead Sea is narrated by 3 different characters who have a very close and personal relationship to the sea and its surroundings.

A sick artist, a scientist and an ageing man faithful to not only his dog but also his home, which the drying-up Dead Sea is slowly taking from him, narrate this tragic tale in VR. Through their testimonies, this VR experience is a nostalgic return to a time when the Dead Sea was not as irreversibly dead as it is today. The hopes of many locals are disappearing as it dries up. The lyrical narrative relies on both the beauty and the horror of the sea and the surrounding lunar landscape is the notional main character – nature. The VR film makes it possible to discover the local landscape and its most striking visual attributes, and the interactive elements even let the viewer become salt crystals, one of the elements of the Dead Sea now disappearing forever.
