Films That Will Hit You Hard

Are you mulling over which of the 133 documentaries at One World 2020 to see? The festival’s programme director, Ondřej Moravec, programmers Julie Kárová and Barbora Hudečková, and our colleagues from the People in Need, give their tips for the best of the festival’s 22nd year.

When Tomatoes Met Wagner

Will tomatoes grow better if you play Wagner for them? This is what cousins Aleco and Christos try to find out. With the help of local older women, they grow and process tomatoes on an eco-farm in a small Greek village. The film is an entertaining and honest portrait of a community that is trying to deal with the challenges associated with a sustainable, environment-friendly approach to farming and also succeed on the international market.
Julie Kárová

This Train I Ride

When I was a boy, something I saw in fiction films greatly appealed to me – jumping onto a freight train and mindlessly travelling somewhere. This film shows that someone has actually fulfilled such a dream and lives from train to train. This is a singular film about femme power, freedom, trains, and also the traumas from which we are escaping.
Ondřej Moravec

The Feminister

A unique view behind the scenes at the highest levels of international politics, which were stirred up by the former Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margot Wallström. She caused an uproar with such things as her belief that a woman’s view is necessary in politics, and her sharp criticism of Saudi Arabia. Come to the cinema and form your own opinion about this distinctive politician.
Barbora Hudečková

Labyrinth

A glimpse into the ordeal of former Azerbaijani political prisoners. Rashadat, now living and working in Budapest, is hosting his friend and former cellmate, Rasul. Against the backdrop of ordinary life in Europe, the two activists remember the two years they spent in prison, locked up on politically-motivated charges and the consequences of their imprisonment for the loved ones. It's a beautiful portrait of two individuals and a powerful testimony of how politics can shape our destiny.
— Anna Zamejc, coordinator of the PIN East European human rights programmes

Ayahuasca – Kosmik Journey

Every school teaches that drugs are bad. But in virtual reality they don’t do as much damage. The simulation of imbibing the shamanic ayahuasca drug from the Amazon is a magnificent visual experience, which will make your mind, heart, and lungs flutter.
Ondřej Moravec

Sea-Watch 3

Do you believe that non-profit organisations operating in the Mediterranean work hand in glove with smugglers? Or do you conversely believe that they heroically save the lives of people whom others would leave to drown with no regrets?  Depending on your personal opinion, the captain of Sea-Watch 3 is either a pirate who doesn’t respect the law, or a human rights heroine. But can you imagine a situation of a captain whose ship is carrying people saved from probable death, and no country wants to let the ship enter their harbours?  Probably not, unless there were a team of filmmakers onboard who document the entire situation, conducting interviews with the captain, the crew, medical personnel, and refugees – and then you could go the cinema and see it all!
— Adéla Jurečková, coordinator of the PIN Migration programme

Copper Mountains

The post-apocalyptic scenery of the Russian town of Karabash, afflicted by extensive mining, will both captivate the viewer and evoke anxiety. The visual experience combined with the testimony of locals is enhanced by the exceptional background soundtrack, which is reminiscent of the mood set by the Chernobyl series.
Barbora Hudečková

Welcome to Chechnya

We’ve been waiting a long time to be able to include a film about the arrest and torture of gays and lesbians in Chechnya. This film presents the extreme stories of people who had to escape from their country. It shows that LGBT rights are in no way yet a resolved issue.
Ondřej Moravec

Progress in the Valley of the People Who Don't Know

Close your eyes and try to put together a collage in your mind from the following pieces: the ruins of a socialist-era factory, a small group of young Syrian refugees, a combine driving on a field, a Pioneer hymn sung standing around a flagpole, and an integration course. The director of the film Progress in the Valley of the People Who Don’t Know took this ridiculously sounding idea and brought it to life, and the final result is definitely more than just the sum of the individual parts. He took the individual pieces and put together a comic yet melancholic film about a lost home and finding one’s way in a new world – about experiences that form unexpected links between today’s refugees and citizens of the former East Germany. What did progress mean more than 30 years ago? What does it mean today? And what does it mean to you?
— Adéla Jurečková, coordinator of the PIN Migration programme
