Hooligan Sparrow

(Hooligan Sparrow)

Ye Haiyan – or Hooligan Sparrow – is an intrepid human rights activist fighting in China, especially for women's rights. She works for free in brothels in order to help prostitutes recover legal status and the right to healthcare.

She has gained such popularity on social networks that her arrest would most likely bring unwanted attention. After two years living in New York, director Nanfu Wang returns to China in order to spend the summer with Hooligan Sparrow. Their adventure begins with a risky protest against the sexual abuse of schoolchildren, which is rife in China. This brave film composed of secretly recorded footage faithfully captures how Sparrow and her 10-year-old daughter face harsh police harassment.

Impact

During the shooting of the film Hooligan Sparrow, director Nanfu Wang witnessed the consequences that the activities of Chinese dissidents have for their children. The film clearly shows us the role that the persecution Sparrow suffers plays in her daughter’s life. This directly inspired Wang to establish the Sparrow Future fund for the children of Chinese activists, and you can contribute, too. The proceeds are aimed chiefly at helping children pursue an education.
