Talal Derki's film Of Fathers and Sons in the Oscar nomination

Talal Derki was awarded the Best Director Award at the One World festival last year. This year, the Syrian director is vying for an even greater honour: his film Of Fathers and Sons has been nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Documentary Feature.

“A portrait of a slightly different family, which causes audiences to wonder how this kind of hell is even possible, takes a full-frontal look at the intimate combination of family life and war,” said the One World director Ondřej Kamenický about the documentary. For the sake of filming, Talal Derki went back to his native Syria and, for two years, he lived in the desert in the north of the country with the family of a radical Muslim and fighter for the Al-Nusra Front. The result is a unique study of Islamic radicalization. Abu Osama has replaced his children’s textbooks with weapons and is preparing them for a holy war. While Ayman (12) would rather go to school, Osama (13) obediently follows the path of jihad. Intimate family moments intermingle with fanaticism on a daily basis.

The 91st Academy Awards will be presented on 24 February late in the evening. And we can confess that the five nominees include two films about life in the United States that are being shown at this year’s One World!
