Journalist Shakila and politician Nilofar are battling for democracy and women’s rights in Afghanistan. A film about courage and finding a balance between love of one’s country and one’s family.
“We have a responsibility to speak on behalf of every woman, from the remote mountains of Pamir to Nuristan.” This film tracks 2 women who are not afraid to be heard. Shakila, a TV reporter and single mother of 3, is a star in her field and openly talks about the Talibans’s violence and the situation of rural women. Nilofar is an MP and a mother lobbying for a law that would punish violence against women. Along with more suicide attacks and dead in the streets, the families of the 2 women receive threats. Both face a difficult decision: Remain in their beloved country and continue to openly fight for freedom even at the cost of placing themselves and their entire families at risk? Or leave while there’s still time?
