An ageing fisherman, Pita, lives with his young wife, Mariela, in a poor Cuban seaside village. His love for home and reconciliation with his own destiny comes up against Mariela's desire to provide a better future for her children.

Pita and Mariela are gradually being abandoned by friends and family members who prefer to risk a dangerous escape from an island on which there is still no freedom. Getting to the other side of the sea is not that easy. Anyone can be caught by a patrol and returned to Cuba, anyone can drown. For Mariela, such a step into the unknown is worth trying, and she wants to free her children from the prospect of a poor life of fishing. But Pita is reluctant to leave. Their conflicting ideas subtly disrupt their tranquil life and gradually build not only an intimate portrait of this couple, but also a universal picture of one of the greatest dilemmas faced by Cubans today.
