A riveting look behind the scenes of the battle with drug cartels, who continue to have an enormous impact on life in Mexico as well as beyond its borders in the USA.

Matt Heineman tracks the stories of two individuals – Mexican doctor José Mireles and American war veteran Tim Foley – each fighting on their own side of the border. Mireles forms an armed civilian militia that ejects the cartels from several towns but he gradually loses control of the situation. Foley’s paramilitary unit tries to find traditional smuggling routes but the mafia knows how to find new ones. The film received the prize for best American documentary at Sundance as well as an Oscar nomination. The documentary plays out almost like a feature film.
