The student movement, which fought against high tuition fees at the University of Johannesburg, has grown into a nationwide protest against social inequality.
In 2015, South African universities again increased their tuition fees. Students at Witwatersrand University demanded affordable education and stood against the systematic exclusion of poor blacks from higher education under the hashtag #FeesMustFall. The police intervention against them triggered protests at universities across the country, and over the following months, the dispute over fees grew into a fight against deeply rooted social inequalities. Based on the testimonies of student leaders and the vice-president of the university, brutal scenes directly from the front lines of the protests and subsequent media reports, the development of the revived efforts for universal freedom are documented in meticulous detail.
