For 5 years the filmmakers tracked 9 children in a remote Philippine village and recorded a harsh testimony about extreme poverty. Health issues, poor harvests and unpredictable weather all present life or death situations.

These children, born into poverty in the Philippines, pay a high price for it, working in the mines and fields, or looking for gold. They lack schooling and proper medical care. There is no time for childhood. Life in the village revolves around hard work. Yield is all that matters. Planting and harvesting of eggplants is the highlight of the season, forming the framework for otherwise dreary days. From an unemotional distance, the filmmakers capture anonymous faces and places, wordlessly transporting the audience into the vicious circle of poverty and despair. They succeeded in capturing harsh proof that the Philippines are no tropical paradise, or at least not for everyone.
