Engaged Documentary Film and Ecology

Thursday, April 28th 2005, 10pm, after the screening of New Eldorado.
The debate will focus on the overexploitation of rainforest and mineral resources, the impact of such interventions on the local and global environment and the violation of the local people's traditional way of the life. The main guests will be Ben Stark (producer and editor of the film We are the Indians, depicting the live of the Argentinean tribe Guaraní surviving in the vicinity of the slowly disappearing rainforest) and Tibor Kocsis (who's New Eldorado follows the project of the Rosia Montana Gold Corporation, which with the support of its Canadian investors intends to wipe off the map a picturesque Romanian village and build a giant gold mine). The discussion will be moderated by representatives of Czech ecological organizations; CEE Bankwatch Network (that was actively involved in the cause of the Rosia Montana Gold Corporation) will be represented by Klára Schirová.

Documentary film as critique instrument of political system

Sunday, May 1st 2005, 10pm, after the screening of In the Name of God.
The debate is aimed to discuss and deduce on human political rights, in particular those whose lives are at risk, or who are repressed by censorship, through through films engaged with the subject. Guests will include two famous directors: Anand Patwardhan from India (In the Name of God) and Don Edkins from South Africa (Story of a beautiful country). Moderator of the debate is Vit Janeček, well known Czech documentary filmmaker and film theorists, who also has on his count few politically orientated analytical documentaries as for example, his latest film Rules of the Game.
