On Wednesday 14 April, Nata¹a Kandiæ from the Humanitarian Law Center in Belgrade will visit the One World festival. At the Opening Ceremony in Archa Theatre that night she will receive the Homo Homini award. This award is given annually by People in Need to persons with outstanding merits in promoting human rights, democracy, and the non-violent resolution of political conflicts. Nata¹a Kandiæ will be available for interview on Thursday 15 April. Please email filip.sebek@oneworld.cz if you would like to make an appointment.

On Friday 16 April at 11am in the cafe in the Festival Centre (Archa Theatre) there will be a press conference with well-known Chinese dissident, Harry Wu. Two of his films, Communist Charity and Laogai, will be shown during the One World Festival. Harry Wu was born in Shangai in 1937…

He was still a student at Beijing's Geology Institute when he was first arrested in 1960 for criticizing the Chinese Communist Party. He was sent to Laogai and subsequently to 11 other forced labor camps. He was never formally charged or tried during his 19-year imprisonment. Wu was released in 1979 and he moved to the US in 1985.

Wu testified before the US Congress, as well as the European Parliament and the United Nations. In 1992, he established the Laogai Research Foundation to increase awareness of the Laogai camps. The foundation is the primary source of information on the human rights situation in China's forced labor camps. In 1995, he went back to China and was arrested immediately as a spy. He was sentenced to fifteen years in the camps but an international campaign led to his release. Since his release, he has continued to publicize the fight to condemn the Laogai. He has returned to China four times since without getting caught. During these trips, he has documented the injustices of the Laogai system as well as other abuses commited by the government.

Wu is the author of three books about his experiences — Laogai: The Chinese Gulag, Bitter Winds, and Troublemaker — and he has received many international awards for his work.
