Last year we decided to screen a set of films from the festival in Czech prisons. After an agreement with the producers of respected documentaries, we began the project in two prisons, but the number soon rose to 20. The positive response from the prisoners on the screenings and the subsequent debates have proven that this initiative is meaningful.

One World in the Prisons helps prisoners to get out from the cycle of unvaried life behind bars and to see their situation in a new perspective. It also mediates to them different views of familiar issues, while at the same time it reveals the fates of people who might be living far away but who are dealing with similar problems. One of the evaluators aptly described another important aspect of the project: "[the program] gives people behind bars a message that they are not a forgotten or lost community that no one takes into consideration."

The program is prepared in cooperation with prison staff, who have welcomed the project enthusiastically. The prisons often select films related to penitentiary issues; other screened films are on topics such as drug addiction, domestic violence, prostitution, racism, and homosexuality. Guests for the debates include staff and collaborators of the People in Need Foundation as well as other organizations. Naturally, the screenings are entirely voluntary for the prisoners.

Throughout this year’s festival we will screen selected films in four prisons. Films dealing with women’s rights issues will be presented in detention prisons for women in Prague’s district of Repy and the town of Svetla nad Sazavou. Last year the film Killer's Don't Cry attracted great attention, and therefore this year we will screen its sequel, Killer's Come Home. Discussions with the prisoners will be attended by Jarmila Senkova, a member of the festival’s Rudolf Vrba’s Jury.
